Fun on Two Wheels with Sacramento City’s Cycling Clubs

If you like to bike, Sacramento and it surrounding towns offer some great opportunities to hit the road and see some scenery. The area is home to lots of bicycling clubs offering a wide variety of rides for people of all skill levels. Here are a few to consider:

Sacramento Bike Hikers

The oldest bicycle club in Sacramento, the Bike Hikers have about 600 members and focus primarily on touring and recreational rides, ranging from easy to difficult. Non-members are invited to ride to get a “feel” for the club before joining. See their ride schedule at this link. Annual fee: Individual, $15; family, $20.

Sacramento Wheelmen

One of the biggest clubs in the area, the Wheelmen offer more than four-dozen rides every month, traveling through the Sacramento Valley and Sierra foothills. The Recumbent Riders of Sacramento, Carmichael

With a motto of, “The few, the proud, the comfortable,” the city’s recumbent enthusiasts gather tice monthly, usually at William Pond Park on the American River bike trail in Carmichael, for a first Saturday ride and a moonlight ride, which is held on a weekend night closest to the full moon. Davis Bike Club, Davis

The Davis Bike Club offers a wide range of rides or lots of different skill and interest levels, including recreational rides for families, ultra-distance events, randonneuring, racing events and multi-day tours. Events calendar can be found at this link. Annual fee: Individual, $20; family, $30.

Erma’s Diner, Ione

This loosely knit group of cyclists is named for the restaurant that served as their initial meeting location. Now Erma has retired, but the group lives on, meeting every Saturday and Sunday (assuming nice weather) in the parking lot behind the Ione police department. There are no dues and no meetings beyond the weekend rides. See the ride calendar here.
